If your belly still feels heavy, full, or like it’s being pushed outward after having your baby…
You’re not imagining it and you’re definitely not alone.
A lot of women expect their core to “bounce back” after birth. But what they’re not told is that the real issue often isn’t weakness, it’s how your body is managing pressure.
And when that pressure is constantly pushing downward, your core can feel unsupported no matter how much you try to “engage it.”

What’s Really Going On
During pregnancy, your body adapts to carry your baby by expanding your abdomen and shifting how your core works.
After birth, that pressure system doesn’t automatically reset.
So instead of lifting and supporting you, your core may still be:
💧 pushing outward
💧 creating a “bulging” or distended belly
💧 making it harder to feel connected to your muscles
That’s why your belly might still look or feel pregnant even weeks or months later.
Why “Doing More Core Work” Doesn’t Fix It
Most women are told to strengthen their core or do more exercises.
But if your body is still pushing pressure downward, adding more effort can actually make things feel worse.
What your body needs first is:
✨ better pressure management
✨ coordination between your breath, core, and pelvic floor
✨ a way to gently lift instead of push
A Simple Way to Reverse the Pressure
This is where low-pressure breathing techniques (like hypopressives) can help.
They teach your body how to create lift and space instead of force.
Try this:
- Create a soft circle in front of you with your arms
- Take a deep breath in, expanding your ribs
- Exhale fully — blow out all the air
- Gently hold your breath (nose and mouth closed)
- Lift your arms as you lift your ribs (without breathing in)
- Notice a gentle “hollowing” or lift in your belly and low back
- Relax your belly before breathing in again
You’re not forcing your core, you’re retraining it.
Small Shifts, Big Changes
This isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing what your body actually needs.
When your body learns how to manage pressure and create lift, you may start to notice:
✨ less heaviness
✨ more core support
✨ better connection to your body
✨ a belly that feels more like you again
